Physio for Musicians
Musicians can develop injuries due to the high demands placed on them through practicing and performance. They require a large amount of repetitive fine motor control and skill of their upper body and facial areas and this can lead to tissue overload, pain and dysfunction. Other attributes are incorrect posture, excessive force, insufficient rest, faulty technique and stress.
Physiotherapy can be very beneficial in analysing static postures and dynamic movement patterns to diagnose the problem. It also takes into account other activities, ie: hobbies and sport, which may impact on the symptoms. It may also be helpful to bring your instrument to the session to allow observation of playing postures. Besides treating the soft tissue or joint problem, advice on warming up techniques/exercises and stretches, explanation of the importance of taking breaks and carrying out specific exercises can be given.
As a member of BAPAM Cathy has developed a specific interest in this area drawing on her own experience of playing in orchestras and ensembles.
